South Jordan History

The South Jordan Real Estate Guide To History

South Jordan was first inhabited by nomadic hunter gatherers known as members of the Desert Archaic Culture. The area was later settled by the Fremont people who formed villages and farmed corn and squash. As the climate began to change, and cooler, drier periods came to the area, the Fremont people vacated the area and made way for the Ute, Paiute, and Shoshone.

Entering the valley later was the arrival of an advanced party of the first Mormon pioneers who immediately established new settlements in the area. This lead to an influx of trade smiths entering the area and a boom in population as the South Jordan LDS Branch was organized and established.

Another population boom was the completion of the South Jordan Canal which took water out of the Jordan River. As a result, this lead to many families moving into the new flats above the river bluffs which were now inhabitable for the first time.
