What is Ogden Known For? Outdoor activities! It is a hub for companies involved with mountaineering, biking, skiing, etc. Snowbasin ski resort, the home of the downhill races at the 2002 Olympics is about a 45-minute drive. It has renovated it’s downtown and 25th street is now a popular area for restaurants and bars. The Ogden River runs through the northern part of the city and has been improved with housing and paths along it. To the East, the Wasatch mountains have numerous trails popular for hiking and mountain biking. This area also has a number of high-end neighborhoods with views to the west of the northern end of the Great Salt Lake and is famous for spectacular sunsets. Hill Air Force base just to the south and the IRS are other major employers. Downtown Salt Lake City home to the Utah Jazz is only 45 minutes to the south.
Our Ogden Real Estate Guide tour through Odgen history first takes us to the origins of the area. Originally named Fort Buenaventura, the area was colonized by trapper Miles Goodyear in 1846. Later renamed Brownsville after the purchase by Captain James Brown of all the land comprising what is now Weber County as part of a Mexican Land Grant as at the time the area still belonged to Mexico.
The area is no known today as Ogden named after a brigade leader of the Hudson’s Bay Company, Peter Skene Ogden.
The closest city in Utah to the First Transcontinental Railroad, the area grew massively as a result and even adopted the motto “You can’t get anywhere without coming to Ogden.”
